BizTalk Server 2009 R2 and Product Roadmap Announced

I’m at PDC this week :-), drinking the Microsoft kool-aid!!

Sriram the PUM for BizTalk and my old dev manager from the BizTalk 2004 days gave a run through of the roadmap for BizTalk. He announced BizTalk Server 2009 R2 which will ship in 2010, some of the more interesting key investments are:

  • Alignment with VS 2010 toolset
  • Support for SQL Server 2008 R2
  • New mapper which has been designed in conjunction with MS Research. A previous version of this was demoed a few years back so great to see concrete plans to ship it finally, the new mapper should take some of the pain out of developing large complex maps
  • Various other investments in the adapter story etc

Interestingly, Sriram also talked about the following release which will align BizTalk with AppFabric (code named Dublin), providing support for WF 4.0 and enabling low latency and may other scenarios. Microsoft also plan to continue to support XLANG moving forward. There were no timelines around the ship date for that release, though its clearly a lot of work so my guess would be 2009 R2 + 2 years, but lets see. Sriram demo’ed an early prototype of the WF integration with WF hosted in the BtsNtSvc service. Moving forward the current plan is to host all the BizTalk sub-services in the AppFabric host. Great to see a roadmap and a future for BizTalk.
